A Rapid and Precise Diagnostic Test for the Detection of Parvovirus in Cats
Feline Parvovirus causes feline panleukopenia which affects both wild and domestic felines worldwide. The virus is transmitted by fecal-oral route and is quite stable in the environment. Indirect contact through fomites(clothes, shoes) is the most common route, hence indoor cats are also at risk.
It mainly infects rapidly dividing cells like intestinal tract and cause marked enteritis. Cats of all ages can be infected, but kittens and young cats tends to have very bad prognosis, with high morbidity and mortality.
While some cats will show no symptoms of infection, others may show minor symptoms of anemia, and still others may lose all of their energy and die:
- Diarrhea
- Depression
- Anorexia
- Fever
- Vomit and dehydration
The disease can be confirmed finding the virus in the cat’s stool. The load of virus shedding peaks when clinical disease is most severe, however the virus can still be shed for up to six weeks after recovery.
