A Rapid and Precise Diagnostic Test for the Detection of Distemper Virus in Dogs

Canine Distemper is caused by an RNA virus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae, which targets epithelial tissues in many organ systems in the body. The infection has high mortality rate in dogs and other carnivores worldwide. Outbreaks of the disease are especially frequent in shelters.

Severity of clinical outcomes of Canine Distemper depends on the degree of the immune response mounted by the patient. Puppies are more likely than adults to suffer from the infection. The disease is transmitted by oronasal exposure to body secretion and excretion that contains virus particles. Dogs with subclinical infections can also shed the virus up to 3 months.

Clinical signs of Canine Distemper include:

  • Fever, lethargy, anorexia
  • Serous or mucopurulent ocular-nasal discharge, coughing and pneumonia
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Hardening of the nasal planum and footpads due to hyperkeratosis
  • Neurologic Signs: Most of them still present neurologic abnormalities after the infection has resolved.
  • Dental enamel hypoplasia and metaphyseal osteosclerosis of long bone in young dogs

A definitive diagnosis of Canine Distemper can be made by detection of virus through PCR method. In contrast, detecting antibody can be of low diagnostic value because of the immunosuppressive effects of the virus. QubeMDx provide POC diagnostic solution of Canine Distemper virus for vets to make accurate and prompt medical decision to manage this lethal disease.

Treatment of Canine Distemper infection is largely supportive. Certain antiviral drugs might inhibit viral replication but need further research on its safety and efficacy.
