Feline haemotropic mycoplasmosis is a worldwide important disease which may be fatal. It was previously called feline haemobartonellosis and frequently confused with another disease group feline bartonellosis. Feline bartonellosis, which differs largely from haemotropic mycoplasmosis, is seldom associated with clinical disease in most cases.

 

The three species that most commonly infect cats are 'Mycoplasma haemofelis', ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’, and  ‘Candidatus M. turicensis’. Among them, Candidatus M. haemominutum’ is the most common species revealed in prevalence studies, but the most pathogenic is Mycoplasma haemofelis. Coinfection can occur and ‘Candidatus M. turicensis’ seldom infect cats alone.

While a significant number of infected cats are asymptomatic carriers, the infection may cause severe hemolytic anemia and death in cats with acute infection, especially in young cats infected with M. haemofelis. 

 

While some cats will show no symptoms of infection, others may show minor symptoms of anemia, and still others may lose all of their energy and die:

  • Sudden onset of fever
  • Depression
  • Weakness
  • Lack of appetite
  • Whitish to pale purple gums
